Which Goat Breed is Right for You?

We believe Savannas are an ideal breed of goats.

Savannas have treated us exceptionally well and getting involved with Savanna goats was one of the very best decisions we have made!

Here are our Top 11 reasons why we chose Savanna goats and why you should consider Savannas in your future.

Ease of Birth and Mothering ability:

Savannas are noted for their excellent mothering ability. This is critical for the profitability of any livestock enterprise. It doesn’t matter how many kids a doe has if she either can’t or won’t raise them!

Our Savanna does kid unassisted except on very rare occasions due to a malpresented kid(s). The moms start cleaning their kids off immediately after birth, begin talking to their kids, and allow the vigorous kids to begin nursing soon thereafter. The does are protective and will ensure that nothing or no one else gets too close to their new babies.

Prolificacy

Savanna does are very prolific, usually having twins and triplets. Most years we average over 200% kidding rate.

The number of offspring born is a significant factor in the profitability of any livestock operation. Incorporate Savannas to increase your bottom line!

Milking Ability

Savanna goats have been selected for their milking ability to ensure they can raise multiple kids on their own when provided with adequate nutrition.

Another critical component to profitability is the ability of the does to feed the kids. Again, it doesn’t matter how many kids a doe delivers if she can’t raise and support them properly.

Low Maintenance

Since goats were created with a rumen and legs, it is natural that they were designed to forage by moving around to find low-quality grass and browse that they can convert into meat and energy.

Savannas were selected with those characteristics in mind and are aggressive foragers. Savannas are easy-keepers that grow and produce from forage diets without the need for high-input grains.

Performance Ability

Savannas are a true meat goat and are known for their feed efficiency and rapid growth rates. These characteristics are coupled with great muscling and high-quality meat that is known for its superior taste and texture.

They are an excellent choice for crossbreeding programs to enhance muscling, rate of gain, and carcass yields

Adaptability

Adaptability: Savanna goats are highly adaptable and thrive in their native hot, dry, rugged climate as well as more temperate Midwest climates which include seasons of heat, humidity, cold, rain, and snow.

Health & Do-ability

Savannas are known for their good health and disease resistance and are more tolerant of internal parasites compared to other common goat breeds. As a result, you can expect Savanna goats to be healthy without costly veterinary expenses.

Soil & Water Stewardship

Savanna goats are aggressive foragers. In addition to utilizing permanent pasture systems, goats play a unique and sustainable role in cleaning up weeds and unwanted vegetation. Unlike the use of toxic herbicide chemicals that pollute water and damage soil biology, goats are environmentally friendly and completely sustainable. They can be an intricate component of regenerative agriculture.

In addition, using goats provides beneficial nutrients and beneficial biology for the soil which enhance the health of the soil.

Furthermore, since goats have a small footprint, they are especially suitable for use in erodible areas. And because goats will not wade in, and pollute water, they are an ideal choice to use along wetlands, creeks, and other waterways.

Aggressive Breeders

Savanna bucks are very active and aggressive breeders and have no problem covering reasonably large numbers of does. Even bucklings at the age of 6-7 months of age will aggressively and effectively cover does, making them a natural choice for crossbreeding programs

Market Demand

Due to their later importation from their native South Africa, the Savanna is a rarer breed of goats and is in high demand due to the vast number of benefits listed above. They are in demand for both market- and breeding-stock animals.
